If anything is true, it is the slogan "Driving in the last paradise". The fantastic roads and mountain passes made up for the hardships endured by the drivers and vehicles. Sun, rain and hail with a doomsday atmosphere provided the teams with amusing entertainment and wet feet... In a thrilling finish and literally on the last meter, Sebastian Klackl / Gernot Kronberger with their Porsche 356 still overtook the Porsche 914/6 of Pius Weckerle / Stefan Hommel: seven hundredths of a second were recorded as the difference between first and second place - and this after two tough days with a good 850 km and 24 special stages. And as usual, the car manufacturers opened the doors of their museums and brought the noble family silver to Styria. There were classic cars on display, the quality and density of which is otherwise only achieved at the Mille Miglia or Goodwood.
The Ennstal-Classic is not a sugar run and yet over 400 teams want to take part every year. The organizers set a limit of 200 participants - and the most attractive (secondary) roads in Styria, Upper Austria and Carinthia await them, carefully selected and put together by the organizers. The "Mille-Miglia of the Alps", as the Ennstal-Classic is often referred to, also featured the usual high-caliber field of cars and crews in 2010.
The Alfa Romeo Museum opened its doors and entered two models steeped in history: the 1900 Sport Spider (Moretti/Hofbauer) and the Disco Volante (Knauss/Schönlaub). Precious cars also left the museums of Audi, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes - most of the classic cars were manned by celebrities known from radio and television or former racing drivers such as Jochen Mass (Mercedes), Marc Surer, Prince Poldy of Bavaria or Christian Klien (all BMW), who were joined by motoring pontiffs such as Mario Illien (Ilmor) with a DKW and Mario Theissen (BMW) or the father of Formula 1 world champion Sebsatian Vettel, Norbert Vettel(Porsche).
Leaking fuel and other dramas
The rally started on Thursday with the special stage on the Stoderzinken. Both the ascent and the descent were scored - which was unusual and not all of the classic cars' braking systems could cope with. Then the night stage started and the drama began for the eventual winners. After the time trial at the Niederöblarn airfield, they discovered that their Porsche was leaking fuel - which at first glance seemed irreparable. Sebastian Klackl ordered a beer in a nearby restaurant and told his co-driver: "That's it!". Both of them had done the math without Klackl's wife. "You can post an envelope at the post office, but not the Ennstal-Classic," she urged them on.
Thanks to the kind help of the mechanics, the Porsche was repaired, but at the same time the pair were handed a 600-point penalty for exceeding the time limit. Normally, a penalty of this kind also means forfeiting a top result, but not for the Austrian pairing. They completed the remaining special stages with the precision of Swiss clockwork and worked their way up the rankings.
The weather gods made sure that the participants didn't get too bored on the night stage. He opened the floodgates in such a way that the classic car drivers mutated into boatmen. Dense fog, the hand in front of the face was barely visible, did not make things any easier. Nevertheless, the entourage arrived in Gröbming on time and was able to round off the day in the VIP tent.
Marathon Man
The first vehicle rolled off the start ramp early on Friday morning, at 07:00. It was a good idea to hit the hay soon after the finish of the night stage and get a good night's sleep for the 550 km Tauern circuit. Twelve hours of driving was the order of the day, with very short breaks at most and otherwise: drive, drive, drive. The special stage at the small airfield in Öblarn as well as Nockalm and Sölkpass are fixed parts of the route. Helmut Zwickl and Michael Glöckner, who are responsible for the event, do not miss the opportunity to vary the route from year to year - and always find new sections of the route that correspond to the motto "Riding in the last paradise". The teams believed themselves to be at the stage locations and also on the open route in the depths of Italy: they were supported by countless spectators standing on trellises and waving cheerfully, something that is usually only found in this density at Italian events.
The Ennstal-Classic was traditionally concluded on Saturday with a small circuit through the small town of Gröbming, whose streets were lined with countless spectators. Three light barriers had to be passed as accurately as possible, and this is where Klackl / Kronberger achieved their masterstroke (there you go - it fits, the Ennstal-Classic is in Austria after all): They started the race in second place and crossed the finish line as winners. Pius Weckerle / Stefan Hommel showed true greatness as losers and applauded their conquerors no less warmly.
The organizers then had the icing on the cake for the 20,000 spectators: the "Grand Prix of Gröbming". Sebastian Vettel (Formula 1 Porsche), David Coulthard (Mercdes 300 SL), Gerhard Berger (Porsche 917-10-Turbo), Nanni Galli (Alfa Romeo 155 DTM), Nino Vaccarella (Alfa Romeo 1900 Barchetta), Maria Teresa de Filippis (Maserati), Sir Stirling Moss (Mercedes) and many other stars delighted the fans with their show runs at the Chopard Grand Prix of Gröbming ...
Celebrities and the Ennstal Who's Who
Mario Theissen, BMW motorsport boss, chatted with Mario Illien, head of Ilmor and responsible for the Formula 1 engines at McLaren-Mercedes in the good old days; Christian Klien lounged around in the background, Gerhard Berger chatted with Sebastian Vettel and Helmut Zwickl bustled around like Bernie Ecclestone in real life - a Formula 1 paddock or what? No, Gröbming, a dreamy little village in the Dachstein region, around 20 km from Schladming, was the stronghold of more than just historic motorsport between the French and German Formula 1 Grand Prix in mid-July. Many of the world's top names rushed to the relaxed atmosphere of this little village and paid homage to the noble metal for three days.
Also seen: Derek Bell, co-driver and part of the unforgettable dream team Siffert / Bell in a Porsche 908 and 917; racing legend Sir Stirling Moss, record Mille Miglia winner in 1955 and uncrowned Formula 1 driver; Ex-Formula 1 and endurance racing driver Jochen Mass, now a Mercedes representative, Marc Surer and Sicilian racing driver icon Nino "Nazionale" Vaccarella, former rally champion Rauno Altonen, the other half of rally world champion Walter Röhrl, namely co-driver Christian Geisdörfer, and, and, and. Mario Illien's fitting comment: "What a pity, what a pity that there is no such thing in Switzerland ...!"
