Organizer Christoph Lehmann had prayed and it had worked. Not a drop of rain fell during the first edition of the Dolder Classics in 2016, and so they came in large numbers to the ice rink above Zurich, the drivers of former bread-and-butter cars as well as the proud drivers of rare Italian sports cars. And this time, too, there were some rarities to admire that you don't see every day.
A Swiss car called Belcar
In the mid-fifties, the company A. Grünhut & Co, based in Wollerau near Zurich, intended to participate in the microcar boom that was driving mass motorization, particularly in Germany. They took a license from Egon Brütsch to build and market the Brütsch 200 as the Belcar.
The body consisted of two plastic parts and the engine was a Sachs two-stroke single-cylinder with 11.3 hp. Unlike Brütsch, however, Grünhut opted for a chassis design.
Despite the efforts, nothing came of it apart from a pilot series of a few examples. In total, only one car is said to have survived, and after a thorough technical restoration, it happily drove across the drained ice field on the Dolder.
Wankel fleet
A group of NSU Ro80s also made a grand appearance, with their Wankel engine and pioneering design as much an automotive treat then as now.
Patina or more?
Once again, there were a number of vehicles on display at the Dolder that provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the topic of "patina".
In addition to the aforementioned Belcar with its original paintwork, a Maserati Mistral and a Chevrolet Corvette C1 with clear signs of age could also be seen.
From small to large
Large Americans, such as a magnificent Buick Super Eight from 1951, found their way onto the ice rink, as did the English Mini and the Innocenti variant with De Tomaso sportiness.
Anyone who wanted to could take a close look at a VW Golf, a Ford Taunus or an Opel Kapitän from back then, while those who wanted something more exclusive might have been tempted by a magnificent Alvis with a Graber body or a Rolls-Royce with a boat tail.
In any case, there was plenty to see, as our photo gallery shows.
The other events of the Dolder Classics 2016 are planned for June 12, August 14 and September 11 (see also website).
In addition, the already well-established auction will take place on June 11, 2016 in the run-up to the Dolder Classics.
