The 1924 Buick Speedster was developed from a Standard 6 sedan and was used in circuit races even before the war. In the meantime, the car has found its way from Argentina to Austria and is now often used in regularity races. The Buick brand has a history of over one hundred and twenty years. Once a global brand, in modern times it has unfortunately become synonymous with boring mid-range cars. Far removed from innovation or excellence. Yet the beginnings were brilliant, as this retrospective proves and illustrates with many historical pictures.
Without a doubt, the most famous in-line 8-cylinder engine was designed by Colonel Jesse Gurney Vincent. Packard used this engine from 1923 to 1956, and shortly after 1923 the competition followed suit. Buick, however, offered not just one, but three different 8-cylinder engines. And these had some interesting design characteristics.
The Tüscher brothers were two Swiss coachbuilders in Zurich who, like their competitors Graber, Langenthal and Beutler, built bodies of various designs on chassis from different manufacturers. The Buick Eight Series 40 Cabriolet portrayed here was built in 1937 and is in perfect condition today. While the term "roadmaster" is more commonly used here to describe the plugging of potholes on the highway, the name "Roadmaster" was used in the USA for 13 years to describe the top model in the Buick range. The 1963 Buick Riviera was gigantic from a European perspective. A displacement of 6.6 liters ensured sporty driving performance in a 1.9-ton car measuring 5.1 meters in length. While the driver didn't have to exert himself, the coupé really put its foot down, without hiding the fact that it was actually built primarily for the typical American driving style. Reinhard Seiffert tested the huge Riviera Coupé in 1963 for the magazine Auto Motor und Sport and found many positive, but also some negative aspects, as this refreshed report from that time shows.
