In 1956, Auto Union GmbH laid to rest a project that was not only ambitious but also highly innovative. The company had been working on the development of new models for six years, focusing almost consistently on the development of a series body made of plastic. Shortly before the planned start of production, the project was stopped overnight. Why the company first embarked on the adventure with such enthusiasm and then just as radically pulled out again has a lot to do with the development of the Auto Union. We tell this almost unknown chapter in the history of the Four Rings. In 1945, Auto Union AG, formerly Germany's second-largest car manufacturer, found itself with all its production sites in the Soviet-occupied zone of Saxony. Only a few sales branches were located in the western zones. They formed the new beginning of the company in and the new start as Auto Union GmbH as a production company in Ingolstadt. Dr. Richard Bruhn and Dr. Carl Hahn, formerly members of the Saxon Board of Management, played a key role in driving forward the new start in Bavaria with the help of numerous managers from Auto Union AG.
