Car names often have the strangest 'godparents'. Do you actually know why the Mercedes is called Mercedes? I'm sure there won't be too many of our hobby readers who know the story of the daughter of the Austrian consul Jelineck, whose first name Mercedes, in conjunction with the great Karl Benz, became a global brand on the automobile market. I had to think of this story when I first became acquainted with the'Goggomobil'. Certainly, the name Goggo has long since spread all over Germany on scooter bikes. But the fact that the nickname of the grandson of Hans Glas, the original senior boss of the Isaria agricultural machinery factory deep in Lower Bavaria, would now also become a generic term for a new type of small car is truly something of a 'career'.
