Summary
At the end of 1962, the magazine 'hobby' carried out a major comparative test with eleven saloons from Germany, France, England and Italy. In a tough competition, hot-blooded family sports cars had to be compared with utility saloons designed for comfort. The fact that a German representative won was not a matter of course, as places 2 to 4 went to "foreign countries". This article reproduces the original wording of the report at the time and shows all eleven sedans compared in many archive photos.

Nothing is more difficult than making the right choice for a comparative test of the European mid-size class if you want to give the car-producing countries equal opportunities. In Germany, England and Italy, the mid-size class is strongly represented in terms of type, whereas in France only one company is still building mid-size cars, namely Peugeot. Although the Simca 1500 is in the final stages of development, it is not yet eligible for our test. England has the strongest range of mid-range cars with Austin A 60, Morris Oxford, MG-Magnette, Wolseley, 16/60, Riley 4/72, Hillman Minx and Super Minx, Sunbeam Rapier, Singer Gazelle, Ford Consul and Vauxhall Victor.
