It was also reliable and inexpensive. The Toyota Corona was also very popular, but not necessarily in our part of the world. Only a few examples are likely to have survived; one was photographed and described for this report.

Five seats, five gears and five doors, packed into an estate coupé, almost like a modern Audi A7 or a BMW 4-series Gran Coupé - that should have been a success in 1979, one might think. However, demand for the Toyota Corona Liftback was limited, and today these vehicles are probably less common than some exotic cars from Italy. The Toyota Corona is one of the oldest Japanese passenger cars ever. As early as 1957, Toyota introduced its entry into the luxury class with the Toyopet Corona (model ST10). A four-cylinder engine with 995 cm3 and 33 hp had to suffice; the engine was located at the front and the rear wheels were driven.
