It was probably not without ulterior motives that the Renault people had positioned their new R 8 Major against the optimistic backdrop of the Sanguine Islands in the north of the Bay of Ajaccio. They wanted to say, through the flower, that the R 8 was now equipped to take on and survive the battle with its great and legendary opponent, the Beetle from Wolfsburg. Admittedly: The Major has all the technical requirements to out-score his opponent. But there is something crucial that it does not, or not yet, have: the nimbus that surrounds the VW all over the world. Although the Major has two doors and 10 hp more than the VW, all this is still not enough to inflict decisive blows on the 'hereditary enemy', even on the slightly VW-weary European market - with the exception of France, of course.
