By the mid-sixties, the Renault Dauphine was already getting a bit long in the tooth. But although a successor, the Renault 8, was already on the market, the national government made no attempt to withdraw the "heir to the throne" from the range. And why should they? The cute little rear-engined saloon sold magnificently and only had one real weak point: the steering. In terms of driving performance and comfort, it continued to perform well. This extensively illustrated historical test report from 1965, supplemented with three sales brochures, provides a more detailed verdict.

Small cars are mainly used for driving and less for representation. Even owners of older models of this type of car see no reason to feel socially inferior to drivers of the latest model, as both belong to the large family of small car drivers, who can only hold their own against mid-range car owners if they are united. For this reason, cars in the lower car classes that have not been designed in recent years, such as the VW, the Fiats 600 and 1100 and the Dauphine, are more common than in the other categories. Although the Dauphine only came out in its current form in the 1950s, it was largely based on design drafts made for the indestructible Renault 4 CV - which in turn is almost as old as the aforementioned models. The 4 CV continued to be built for years after the Dauphine was launched, and there is still no sign of the Dauphine being discontinued, although Renault now offers improved and modernized models. After all, why should a car that is still being bought diligently be discontinued?
