The R 5 has been built since January 1972, R 5 L with 850 cc, R 5 TL with 956 cc. It will soon reach the half million mark. Now a new version of the successful model is being launched in Germany: the R 5 LS with 1300 cc. With the R 5 LS, Renault is pushing a spearhead into the high-performance small car class. Too sharp by 4 hp, unnecessarily so. The engine was taken from the R 12 TS and the R 15 TL coupé, but with 64 instead of 60 hp. The 4 hp put it in a higher insurance category, two tariff levels above the R 5 TL. For its 8310 + 115 DM pre freight = 8425 DM, the R 5 LS offers a lot of power, equipment and technical features. The factory expects it to account for around 10 percent of R 5 sales in Germany, more likely more.
