Summary
In the summer of 1961, Renault presented the R4 small car (together with the R3), an extremely practical and affordable four-seater with a front engine and drive. The rustic all-purpose car took a while to win over a larger fan base in this country, but then it was loved until production was discontinued. And beyond. Even in the movies. This driving report portrays a late model from 1984 and tells the story of the likeable Frenchman, supplemented with historical pictures, brochures and a sound sample.

The Renault 4 could only have been created in France. It embodies a good portion of "savoir vivre", as Pedro Lenz, the author of the book "Der Goalie bin ig", which was made into a film with the blue Renault 4 GTL portrayed here in a supporting role, explains. In his childhood, Lenz often ate on the back seat of an R4. "It belongs to France, like the aniseed spirit pastis, the game of boules, chansons and Paris," he says. It was unveiled on October 4, 1961 at the Paris Motor Show. However, by then it was no longer an unknown quantity, as the R3/R4 models had already been eagerly described in the press.
