Summary
Between 1959 and 1963, Porsche built over 30,000 Porsche 356s. They were not the fastest sports cars, but they were among the most reliable and, above all, most suitable for everyday use in their class. And they have remained so to this day. The "Dame", the standard model with 60 hp, was offered as the entry-level model. This driving report portrays a Porsche 356 B 1600 from 1961, describes its history and driving impressions and is supplemented with plenty of historical photos and brochures.
This article contains the following chapters
- The distance to the Volkswagen
- Continuously improved technology
- Trend towards greater safety and comfort

It was officially called the "Dame", the Porsche 356 B 1600, the entry-level model into Porsche heaven. 12,700 DM or 16,500 francs had to be paid if you wanted to buy a basic Porsche with a displacement of 1.6 liters and 60 hp. 60 hp doesn't sound like much at a time when even the smallest diesel had more horsepower. At the beginning of the 1960s, however, 60 hp was enough for the Porsche to reach a speed of 164 km/h, making it one of the fastest cars on the first autobahns, because a VW Beetle, which seemed to be driven by half of motorized mankind in our latitudes, only had a meagre 34 hp and this took it to 115 km/h. This made it a traffic obstacle for the Porsche.
