The Peugeot 205 GTI was a very popular and fast car 30 years ago, but Peugeot wanted even more and built the basis for winning two world rally championships with the Turbo 16. As a waste product, there were also 200 road versions, which demonstrated what was possible in the early 1980s with 200 hp, a mid-engine and all-wheel drive. Ever since the success of the VW Golf, compact hatchback saloons have been among the most popular vehicles on the market. With the VW Golf GTI, Volkswagen also appealed to sporty buyers who liked to drive a practical car. Peugeot countered this with the 205 and convinced many GTI enthusiasts of the lion on the radiator grille. Although the Peugeot 205 GTI was a fast car, it was not sufficient as a basis for the World Rally Championship organized according to Group B. So the French designed the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, which only had the type number, doors, windshield, headlights, radiator grille and a few small parts in common with its brother.
