The Packard is one of the most famous classic cars in the United States. The brand would have been 125 years old in 2024. Packard built prestige cars that offered their occupants a high level of driving comfort. The Standard Eight Type 902 was a good example of this. The author was able to test drive the car in the early seventies.

Half a century ago, when someone spoke of a large car, it had a big engine, an impressive hood, sweeping fenders, a large wheelbase and no trunk. In the meantime, car manufacturers have thankfully dispensed with fenders in favor of front and rear side panels, thus achieving the first stage of a reasonable box shape for family cars. A modern mid-range car can easily accommodate five people with luggage if the payload works. In contrast, the large cars of the past were only large on the outside. Only four people could sit inside, if we forget the emergency seats. The Packard Eight 902 is just such a "big one".
