Summary
In 1971, the ItalDesign Boomerang concept car was exhibited at the Turin Motor Show, and a few months later, in March 1972, it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show equipped with functioning Maserati Bora mechanics. The Boomerang is one of the design milestones and is said to have influenced cars such as the VW Golf and the Lotus Esprit with its consistently geometric and straight lines. This report tells the story of the Boomerang and shows it in over 50 historical and current pictures, some of which have never been published before.

There are few cars that have the same effect on onlookers as the Maserati Boomerang from ItalDesign. Consisting almost entirely of flat surfaces and edges and with an ultra-flat appearance, the silver Boomerang is certainly not a car that can be overlooked. Never intended for series production, Giorgetto Giugiaro was able to give free rein to his ideas. The Boomerang was shown for the first time at the Turin Motor Show in the late fall of 1971. The Automobil Revue noted:"The second innovation from ItalDesign is somewhat reminiscent of Bertone's Stratos wedge coupé. This is a coupé called Boomerang in the 3-liter class, whose powertrain origins are still shrouded in mystery. In any case, this vehicle has not yet been fully completed and is only shown as a 1:1 model. At the 1972 Geneva Motor Show, we should be able to find out more about this style study ... if ItalDesign receives the exhibition space it ordered too late. Incidentally, the dashboard of the Boomerang is not housed in a horizontal drum, but in a circular instrument cluster surrounded by the steering wheel."
