Founded in December 1914, Maserati initially only built racing cars. It was not until ten years after the Maserati brothers had sold their company to Adolfo Orsi that the first series-produced Maserati for road use appeared in 1947 with the 1500 GT. Under Orsi, the brand with the trident rose to become an established name alongside Ferrari in the 1960s, but then ran into financial problems almost as quickly. Citroën took over in 1968 and sold it to Alejandro de Tomaso in 1975, who ventured into large-scale production with the Biturbo models. Maserati has been part of the Fiat Group since 1993.

Maserati 8C-3000 - the latecomer
The Maserati 8C-3000 with a three-liter engine was the last expansion stage of the two-seater Grand Prix racing cars from Bologna. Developed from the Tipo 26 with half the engine capacity, it was little more than a brief transitional solution to Maserati's first successful monoposto. More than 50 years after the two works cars, a third 8C-3000 was built on the basis of original parts. This article sheds light on the short racing career of the three-liter type and explains how Maserati's eight-cylinder racing cars came apart.
At the beginning of the 1950s, Irishman Bobby Baird had a monoposto built from parts of an accident-damaged Maserati 4CL, with which he took part in circuit and hill climb races. The car reappeared many years later and was one of the crowd favorites at the Rétromobile in Paris.
