Preview (beginning of the article)
Jaguar launched the XK 120 in 1948. Austin presented the Austin Healey 100 four years later. And Triumph offered the TR2 sports car from 1953. In contrast, MG only had the TC, the TD and, from 1954, the TF to offer after the war. This meant that MG was no longer a match for the competition. With the merger of the Nuffield Group, to which MG belonged, with Austin and thus Austin Healey, the British Motor Corporation was formed in 1952. Sir Leonard Lord, formerly the top boss at Austin, was appointed the new boss. This explains why MG was somewhat neglected and the sale of Austin Healey was promoted. It was only when the MG TF had become completely unsaleable that the factory in Abingdon was given permission to bring out a new model. The plans for this had long been drawn up at MG.
