Dino 308 GT4 - the last Dino and the first V8 road sports car from Ferrari
Summary
Between 1974 and 1980, Ferrari built the Dino 308 GT4, a mid-engined sports car with four seats. Unusually, Bertone was commissioned to design the bodywork. The built-in V8 engine was a new development. The car presented in 1973 was coherent and yet stood in the shadow of the Pininfarina-designed 308 GTB/GTS models for almost its entire construction period. In this driving report, a Dino 308 GT4 from 1974 is presented in detail, the development history is recorded and driving experiences from the past and present are compared. The documentation is completed with many historical illustrations and the sales brochure from 1974.

Fitting four seats into a mid-engined sports car almost sounds a bit like the cubature of the circle. However, Bertone was responsible for a whole series of such vehicles, including the NSU Ro 80 Trapeze, a concept car with a Wankel mid-engine. The Lamborghini Urraco, already presented as a prototype in 1970, was also one of them. Bertone could therefore certainly be said to have had experience with this design. The fact that he was chosen to design the successor to the Dino 246 GT was nevertheless a surprise. Almost all Ferrari (and Dino) cars up to that point had been designed by in-house designer Pininfarina, and Bertone had only ever built two quite successful one-offs based on the Ferrari 250 GT.
