An almost 50-year-old concept car, which paved the way for the Dino 206/246 GT and the Fiat Dino Spider, is making its debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Pininfarina broke new design ground with the Dino 206 Berlinetta Speciale study presented at the 1965 Paris Motor Show. The result is still impressive today. This report gets to the bottom of this design milestone and shows its impact on the design of the successor vehicles in words and pictures (with over 50 illustrations).
The Dino 206 S is certainly one of the most beautiful racing Ferraris, even though it did not bear the trademark with the prancing horse. The planned production run of 50 vehicles came to nothing; only 18 were built and were able to make a name for themselves in motorsport despite unfavorable conditions. Almost all of the vehicles have survived and are now traded for millions, such as chassis 006 offered by RM Auctions at the auction on the occasion of the 2012 Monaco GP Historique. This report goes back to the history of the Dino 206 S and, in addition to the 206 S, shows the 166 S prototype and Pininfarina variations on the same chassis.
The Dino 206 S was not as successful as it could have been. And it received less attention from the press than its competitor at the time, the Porsche Carrera 6. In the mid-sixties, Enzo Ferrari had no desire to get involved with mass producer Fiat, nor to build newfangled stuff like a mid-engine into his road-going sports cars. But external circumstances forced him to rethink. The result was the Dino 206 GT with a light-alloy body and racing engine, of which only 152 were built within a year. This article tells the story of the first Ferrari with a mid-engine, which only ever had one first name, and shows it in many photos.
Alfredo Ferrari, known as Dino to his friends, was to take over his father's business one day. He soon showed great interest and talent. He studied at the Technical University of Modena and in Switzerland. Even as a student, he developed plans for a small V6 racing engine. When Ferrari decided to build a six-cylinder mid-engine, he took his son's name and called it the Dino 206 GT.
The Dino 246 GT turns out to be a fascinating car in the 1971 test. It is without doubt a one-piece construction, with many advantages and only a few disadvantages. Its masterful mechanics, the noble engine and the streamlined, yet spacious body are capable of inspiring car enthusiasts. Driving the low, roadworthy car offers maximum driving pleasure and enjoyment. However, due to the price and the limited number of units, the Dino is only available to a small circle of drivers. Once again, the old insight that racing car construction is the cradle of the safe car is confirmed. The test not only provides an insight into the characteristics of the Dino, but also shows the state of the art at the time.
There are few cars that are more fun to drive and look as good as a Dino 246 GTS. And this applies to almost every color in which the compact mid-engine sports car was delivered. The Dino 206/246 GT was the first mid-engined road sports car from Ferrari. Even though it was not called Ferrari but Dino in memory of Enzo Ferrari's late son Alfredo (Alfredino), it was still one of the best sports cars of its time and was at least equal, if not superior, to its more noble twelve-cylinder brothers in terms of handling and maneuverability. Between 1974 and 1980, Ferrari built the Dino 308 GT4, a mid-engined sports car with four seats. Unusually, Bertone was commissioned to design the bodywork. The built-in V8 engine was a new development. The car presented in 1973 was coherent and yet stood in the shadow of the Pininfarina-designed 308 GTB/GTS models for almost its entire construction period.
