The special Lincoln of Mr. President
Summary
For decades, three brands competed for the favor of the top ten thousand in the USA: Cadillac, Imperial and Lincoln. However, it was the vehicles of the Ford subsidiary Lincoln/Mercury that were used several times as the basis for the presidential limousines, in particular the Continental models. In 1939, 1950, 1961, 1968 and 1972, the respective American presidents took possession of special versions of the Lincoln. This article describes the advantages of the various presidential limousines and shows them in many historical photographs, supplemented by pictures of the production version.

For many years, three luxury brands competed in the United States to see who could produce the most ostentatious and luxurious automobiles: Cadillac (General Motors), Imperial (Chrysler) and Lincoln (Ford). Traditionally, Cadillac usually had the largest market share, but it was Lincoln that was able to offer something special for the 1961 model year, a simply elegantly styled huge saloon with counter-opening doors, which was also available as a convertible with the same four doors. This Lincoln Continental was not only awarded the "Industrial Designers Institute" prize, it also remained in production for an uncharacteristic number of years, as the last classic Continentals were built in 1970. The vehicles had a good reputation, the buyer even received a two-year warranty, the quality of the materials used was high and the workmanship meticulous. In the sales brochure, the marketing people wrote: "Form beautifully follows function". No wonder, this vehicle was also a good basis for the presidential limousine.
