Summary
Upholstery as soft as marshmallows and a hood as wide as the land. The Continental Mark IV still embodied the traditional form of luxury, where comfort was paramount. We let a 1972 example take us back to the seventies and inspire us to write this article.
This article contains the following chapters
- Now even bigger and more lavish
- Gentle nature of gentle force

Preview (beginning of the article)
There was once a time when automotive luxury was not defined by the number of electronic assistants, but by driving comfort and manufacturing quality. The quieter, smoother and, above all, better finished a car was, the higher it stood in the global hierarchy of top products. However, the latter criterion in particular became increasingly less important as series and assembly line production grew steadily. Perfect assembly costs a disproportionate amount of time, and time is expensive. When the Ford Motor Company set out to build the best luxury car in the world in 1955, it therefore paid particular attention to quality and perfect craftsmanship. The assembly of the Continental Mark II therefore took twice as long as that of an ordinary Lincoln, but was also checked seven times for flawlessness according to a detailed plan. Of course, this time expenditure had its price: when the Mark II - the only model of the newly founded Continental Division - appeared for the 1956 model year, it cost just under 10,000 dollars, around one and a half times the price of a Cadillac Eldorado and twice the price of an Imperial Southampton.
