The mutation of the Autodynamics Deserter into a comfort buggy (ZQ)
Summary
Dune buggies were primarily invented for fun off-road driving and were seen as a fun alternative to serious, all-wheel-drive off-road vehicles. As a rule, they were built on a shortened VW chassis and also powered by its air-cooled rear engine. In 1970, Automobil Revue drove an early Dune Buggy of the Autodynamics Deserter type optimized for Switzerland and gained very positive impressions, as the text faithfully reproduced here shows.

A Dune Buggy is an automobile designed to meet the most modest demands in terms of driving comfort. In the USA, where it experienced a triumphant success within a few years, there are a lot of buggy accessories for comfort. However, they are hardly capable of transforming these stubborn rattlers into well-mannered road vehicles. Since neither the good weather periods nor the sandy beaches are extensive in Switzerland, and because the Swiss penchant for perfection is difficult to reconcile with primitiwehi-keln, the Dune Buggy is only tentatively gaining a foothold in this country. In order to remove the second of these negative aspects from the "Dune Buggy's" path to success, Basel-based garage owner Jean-Pierre Läubin has created a comfort buggy. His basis is the Deserter, which is to be equipped with VW engines and which he has ordered in batches as a kit from Autodynamlcs, the largest buggy manufacturer in the world. He has been appointed European representative by Autodynamics, which also manufactures racing cars of various calibers.
