"The best road motorcycle BMW has ever built" was the title of the first ride report on the BMW R 80 G/S in Motorrad magazine in 1980. In the gnarled-looking model designation, G/S stands for off-road/road, R means two-cylinder boxer engine, the number 80 stands for 800 cc displacement. After the official presentation on September 1, 1980 near Avignon/France, the established motorcycle experts assessed this motorcycle according to conventional criteria and, in view of its limited off-road capabilities, criticized it in terms ranging from veiled to open. An off-road motorcycle, which at the time meant a high-legged two-stroke with a displacement of up to 250 cc and a weight of less than 120 kg. With its 145 kg, a Yamaha XT 500 only just fits into this scheme. And now BMW comes along and declares a motorcycle with an 800 cc two-cylinder and 200 kg full tank to be an off-road machine.
