At GM, the answer to the Mustang was the Chevrolet Camaro from the fall of 1966. The second generation was presented in 1970, of which almost two million were built by 1981. One of the last second-generation Camaros with "Berlinetta" equipment is the subject of this driving report and is shown in historical and current photo material.

With the Mustang, the American car manufacturer Ford shocked the entire competition. General Motors and Chrysler also developed cars for the newborn pony car class at lightning speed. At GM, the answer to the Mustang was the Chevrolet Camaro from fall 1966 and the Pontiac Firebird five months later. Both used the same platform and enjoyed a large fan base, reason enough to announce the second generation in February 1970. When Ford was already starting to think about a compact Mustang, the GM people presented an enlarged Camaro. With the same wheelbase, the second-generation Camaro grew by 5 cm in length and 1 cm in width and was 5 cm lower, which in itself made it significantly sleeker. Flowing curves and long doors without a rear side window made the car appear even more elongated.
