The 40th edition of the 24-hour race was certainly one of the most special for many spectators and fans: The Rothmans Porsche 956 with a 1-2-3 victory, many exotic cars at the start and a few surprises provided excitement. From today's perspective, it is of course great to be able to experience these moving images and well-recorded engine sounds again!
Concentrated summary
The almost 1-hour film begins with the test runs before the race and devotes a lot of time to the Cooke Racing team: interviews with team boss Ralph Cooke and the riders are not missing, as is detailed footage of the preparations. Cooke Racing was at the start with a brand new Lola prototype, a yellow Lola T610 with an unusually sleek aerodynamic design and a black Porsche 935 K3. They were hoping for great chances, especially with the Lola, but unfortunately it retired after just 28 laps. Instead, they took fifth place overall with the Porsche 935!
Another eye-catching car was certainly the Sauber SHS C6, which stood out with its zebra-striped outfit in red and black. Many pictures of this fascinating car in the pit lane and during the race are captured in this film.
English fans will certainly be thrilled by the many scenes of the Nimrod (with Aston Martin engine). Incidentally, there is a separate documentary about the Nimrod, which was broadcast on the BBC at the time.
Another exotic car was certainly the Chevrolet Camaro, which can also be seen and, above all, heard very well in the film.
Different perspectives are also shown, but mainly from the edge of the racetrack, i.e. no cockpit shots. Instead, the film team was able to record hot duels, including the inter-team fights in the Rothmans team. Really spectacular!
The finale is surprising: it's unbelievable how the spectators storm the track during the race and run towards the Rothmans Porsche, which can then barely drive back into the pit lane! Those were the days...
A few minutes of the movie can already be enjoyed on the left under "Multimedia". But it's still worth buying the whole movie!
