The smallest Ford model benefited little from the increased demand for low-cost cars in the last six months; the Escort was left behind even more than before by the Opel Kadett. We examine the reasons for this in the test of the '74 model and also discuss the Escort 1300 GXL luxury model, which has been on sale since February. The Escort, which was developed by Ford England, was and is not a big seller on the German market. Criticism of the Escort's rounded body and driving characteristics is always countered by Ford executives with the remark that the Escort's overall sales in Europe can certainly hold its own alongside the Opel Kadett. From this point of view, it should come as no surprise that a special Escort model with a 940 cc/36 hp engine is not sold in Germany.
