From 1992 to 1999, BMW built over 70,000 M3s of the E36 series. Within this large production volume, however, a few rarities stand out, one of which is the M3 GT, of which only 356 were built. This driving report explains how this rarity came about and how it feels.

The history of the BMW M3 of the E36 series is actually quite straightforward. There were neither eye-catching facelifts nor many special models, only the engine became bigger and more powerful after around three years. There were no more evolutionary models as with the predecessor E30, with a few exceptions. This is another reason why the M3 GT is particularly interesting. In October 1990, a new generation of three called the E36 replaced the successful E30. Visually, the differences were significant; the new model had to score points above all with better aerodynamics, which is why, for example, the twin headlights were now mounted under glass.
