Class winner in Spe - Audi 80 GT in the (historic) test
Summary
The Audi 80 GT rounded off the attractive 80 series with a sporty edition. In 1973, it was considered the best sports instrument in the 1.6-liter class. The safety paint finish and matt black accents provided a sporty touch. However, the base price of DM 10,750 was a proud feature. The test report from back then explains whether you got enough for your money.

The Audi 80, designed as a family car, was initially limited to 55, 75 and 85 hp versions. This was the right choice, as the assembly lines had to be speeded up considerably in order to meet demand. The new Audi 80 GT burst into the success boom - somewhat surprisingly - and although it is to be presented at the IAA, production will not start until October. The winter period should enable the production of 5000 units, which will then ensure homologation as a Group 1 car in the spring. Although the Audi NSU is not only aimed at pure sports fans - everyday drivers are also considered performance-hungry today - it is now clear that the 80 GT is probably the best sports instrument in the 1.6-liter class. 100 hp (63 l/hp) can only be found in this class in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Super, the Fiat 132 Special or the Renault 17 TS - cars that cannot compete in terms of other driving qualities. In Germany, the Audi's direct competitors are now the Ford Escort RS 2000 and BMW 2002.
