Understated cars trigger different reactions: Astonishment among drivers of expensive cars, admiration among owners of weaker models in the same range. The Audi 80 GTE is a special understatement car. The same was already true of its predecessor, the 80 GT, but it was little appreciated by buyers. After an unfavorable start (oil crisis, speed limit), the GT version accounted for less than two percent of Audi 80 registrations in two years of sales. Challenged by the Kadett GT/E, Escort RS and expected Golf GTI competition, the Ingolstadt-based company was nevertheless not afraid to offer a GT successor.
