Our main article provides a detailed summary of the entire 24 Hours of Le Mans 1983. Therefore, only the special features of the 60-minute film are discussed here.
From the driver's perspective
For the first time in 1983, cameras were mounted in the racing cars at Le Mans (especially Porsche?) and this footage is therefore a special treat for film fans! For the first time, you could see complete laps from the driver's perspective and watch almost live how quickly the scenery flies past you as you race along the Hunaudières (back then without chicanes!).
Right in the middle of it all
Many sequences in the film show the action in the pit lane before and during the race. It's fantastic to see the drivers and fans, mechanics and team bosses so vividly, also to recall what the pit lane at Le Mans looked like back then. Really brilliant!
It is noticeable that the famous Hawaiian Tropic Girls must have charmed the cameraman too, they are shown again for a few seconds every few minutes.
Documentary value
In addition to the impressive footage of the race, including the accident involving Ickx and Lammers at Mulsanne, ...
... but there are also many shots documenting events away from the track: The Ferris wheel, at that time still set up after the Dunlop arch, the fans, almost directly on the track, the restaurant directly on the "Mulsanne Straight", and and and... Although the movie only lasts 60 minutes, a lot of events and impressions are shown and recorded.
We therefore recommend this film to all motorsport fans, especially Le Mans fans. The best value for money is to buy the 10-disc box set: Le Mans 1980 to 1989.
