On April 10, 1983, the 1000 km were held in Monza as part of the one-make world championship for Group C sports cars. Only Porsche and Lancia were able to aspire to top places, with the brand new Lancia LC 2 making a name for itself with the fastest time in practice. Group C, newly formed in 1982, went through a lean period in 1983, as the teams, some of which were financially sparse, concentrated on Le Mans and Ford had left a considerable gap after its withdrawal. This left only Porsche and Lancia with works teams for Monza, but the surprisingly fast Lancia LC 2 still provided excitement (at least at the beginning) The forerunners of the Monza 1000 km race were held as the "Coppa Inter-Europa" on the 6.3 km Monza circuit as early as 1949. The 1000 km race was held as early as 1954, In 1956, they expanded to the ten-kilometer circuit. Racing continued on the large circuit, which also included the banked oval, until 1969. In 1966, chicanes were added to reduce speeds.
