Three years of work, a vehicle that really shouldn’t exist: The Trabant P 602 V with a KKM 400 Wankel engine—a working prototype built by VEB Sachsenring in 1966—has been restored and demonstrates just how close the GDR’s automotive industry once came to developing a rotary piston engine. Timed to coincide with the 124th anniversary of Felix Wankel’s birth, the August Horch Museum will celebrate starting October 1, 2026, with the special exhibition “60 Years of the Trabant with a Wankel Engine,” featuring a second, completely different Wankel Trabant alongside it.
