RM's virtual monthly auctions under the title "Open Roads" have already become a habit. The next round will take place from May 19 to 26, 2021. As in previous rounds, cars from different countries and in different currencies will be on offer.
There are 50 vehicles in total, including a small truck and a camper van. If the latter is not taken into account, the cars are on average 44 years old and come from 29 brands. The majority of the lots were reported from the USA.
Only one pre-war car
Only one car from the period before the Second World War came under the virtual hammer. It is a Cartercar Model 7 Touring from 1914, which is expected to sell for EUR 30,000 to 45,000.
The other end of the age spectrum is more generously stocked, with as many as nine cars dating back to 2000 or younger.
Some super classics
Despite the low average estimated value of EUR 72,100 / CHF 79,130, there are also some real super classics on sale.
Examples include a right-hand drive Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB from 1974 from England, a left-hand drive Dino 246 GT from 1971 from Great Britain and a Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 liter from 1962 from the USA.
The Fiat 124 Abarth Rally Group 3 from 1975 (EUR 80,000 to 90,000) and the Porsche 911 Turbo from 1987 with a flat front end also belong to the super classics.
There are also two Jaguar XK models up for auction and a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9.
Exotic items
Some of the vehicles at the auction certainly have an exotic status.
You don't see a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona like this every day, which is underlined by the estimated value of USD 275,000 to 325,000. The fact that it is a manual transmission and thus one of only around 139 factory versions in 1969 is certainly also a contributing factor.
Another special feature is the Meyers Tow'd from 1970, a very special buggy with a 1.88-liter VW engine and minimalist bodywork. USD 10,000 to 15,000 should be enough for a knockdown and, as with 16 percent of the vehicles, no minimum price is required.
Or how about one of the two Lancias, namely an Aprilia from 1949 or a Beta Autocarro, a rear-wheel drive tow truck? You practically never see either.
Interesting youngtimers
Youngtimer fans should take a look at one of the popular Toyota Supra Turbo from 1997.
This is a car that was built for the 15th anniversary. However, the automatic transmission probably depresses the value somewhat; the asking price is USD 60,000 to 70,000.
A BMW M3 from 1989, which was delivered new to BMW headquarters and also has a sunroof and sound package. EUR 55,000 to 65,000 seems to be a fair value for the black four-cylinder touring car.
More information about the individual vehicles and many pictures can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
