Preview (beginning of the article)
The "Open Road Online Only" format has already become established at the RM/Sotheby's auction house. The auction mainly features cars in the mid-price segment from various markets around the world, which can be bid on via the Internet or in writing. There is no auctioneer, but the auction runs for around a week each time. From March 17 to 25, 2021, RM/Sotheby's offered a total of 94 cars in this way as part of the "Open Roads March 2021" online auction, which together were estimated at just under EUR 8.3 million. Each lot was expected to fetch an average of around EUR 88,000. With less than a fifth of lots without a price limit, it was primarily the online bidding propensity of interested parties that decided whether to buy or not. 55 percent of the cars, which were on average 39 years old, were ultimately sold to new owners, while 42 cars (or 45%) could not be sold.
