The Louwman Museum has set itself the task of showing all facets and eras of the development of the automobile. Last year, the focus was on the "cycle cars" of the early decades of the last century. This year, the time machine has been set to the nineties. "We are highlighting the super sports cars from this period because there was a hype about high-performance super sports cars in this decade.
It all started in the 80s. Numerous new brands came onto the market. Many new launches were announced in the early 1990s. But the financial crisis of 1992/93 caused wealthy enthusiasts to shy away and led to a decline in new orders for supercars, which in turn led to many brands going bankrupt and projects being terminated prematurely," explains Ronald Kooyman, Director of the Louwman Museum.
Impressive super sports cars
Nevertheless, numerous interesting and impressive super sports cars appeared in the 1990s. "We have managed to put together a unique collection, whereby we define 'super sports cars' as cars that are produced in limited numbers, have at least 500 hp and reach a top speed of over 300 km/h.
Within this group, we have divided the cars into different categories: Production models, limited editions, homologation specials and prototypes. Some of the cars have never been seen in the Netherlands or even in the Benelux. Perhaps nowhere else in the world in this combination...", says Kooyman.
