On September 3, 1996, the first Octavia of the modern generation rolled off the assembly line in Mladá Boleslav. Three decades and approximately 7.9 million vehicles later, it has become the best-selling Škoda of all time, spanning four generations.
A Historic Name Returns
The name Octavia was anything but new in 1996: Škoda had already produced a model under this name between 1959 and 1971. Development of the modern successor began in 1992, one year after Škoda joined the Volkswagen Group. Access to the group’s technology made it possible to create a decidedly practical car, whose design was drawn up by Dirk van Braeckel, Škoda’s head of design at the time. At the same time, a new plant was built in Mladá Boleslav, increasing annual capacity from 90,000 to 350,000 vehicles.
The First Generation Lays the Foundation
The sedan made its debut on April 4, 1996, and series production began on September 3. Even back then, the Octavia offered an exceptionally large trunk with a capacity of 528 liters. The popular Combi followed in 1998, all-wheel drive was introduced in 1999, and in 2000, the first Octavia RS catered to sporty drivers. 1.44 million units of this generation rolled off the assembly line, with some variants continuing into 2010, even though the successor had already been unveiled in 2004.
Second and Third Generations: More Space, More Technology
The second generation improved the interior and increased the trunk capacity by an additional 32 liters; technology such as the DSG dual-clutch transmission made its debut. By 2013, 2.6 million units had been produced. The third generation (2012 to 2020) introduced driver-assistance systems from higher-end models, a lighter body, optimized TSI and TDI engines, and the fuel-efficient GreenLine variant. In 2017, a comprehensive facelift featuring split headlights followed.
Fourth Generation: The Current Best-Seller
The fourth generation has been available at dealerships as a sedan and station wagon since November 2019. Following the model refresh in early 2024, it features up to ten airbags as well as a driver attention and fatigue warning system. Today, the Octavia is built in Mladá Boleslav, Kvasiny, and Kostanay, Kazakhstan.
A Regular on the Podium
For Škoda CEO Klaus Zellmer, the Octavia has been “an icon of the brand for three decades.” He says it has always offered what customers value: spaciousness, practicality, safety, and features at an attractive price. Industry experts agreed—several “Best Cars” awards and the “Golden Steering Wheel” adorn the resume of this bestseller.
