In the "far north" of Germany - on the North Sea, between the Dollart and the Jade Bay - lies East Frisia. And in the middle of this peninsula, just three kilometers from the city center of the charming residential town of Aurich, is the wellness and garden hotel Ringhotel Köhlers Forsthaus. Idyllically situated on the edge of the forest and surrounded by a park-like garden on a small lake, it is a true oasis of peace!
A popular meeting place for classic car enthusiasts
The 1st classic car hotel in East Frisia is a popular meeting place for car enthusiasts for exciting road trips to discover the magic of the unique landscape of East Frisia with its many special features. And who thinks it's always straight ahead on the roads in the "flat country"? Far from it, you can experience it for yourself. Either on guided tours or on your own with a road book or sat nav on many interesting themed tours.
On low-traffic roads, sometimes behind the dyke, sometimes through meadows and forests, moorland and Fehn areas with their white bascule bridges, past mighty Gulfhöfewindmills, both historic and modern, to imposing towers and buildings as well as beautiful parks or with a country drive to the Dutch neighbors.
The German version of Route 66
And then there is the "Route 66 in L. A."! L. A. stands for the district of Aurich. But just as the legendary cult tour "Route 66" in America extends to other states, it also passes through other districts in East Frisia ...

The route is a unique cult(o)ur - a historic route that shows stone witnesses of a bygone era in beautiful landscapes.
On the tour, East Frisia expert Kalle Altmann will take you along small roads behind the dykes to castles and palaces, to Thingstätten and legendary walls. A tour that tells the story of the powerful East Frisian chieftain families and the feared pirates and brings the struggle of the freedom-loving Frisians against the Vikings, foreign rule and the forces of nature back to life.
Participants gain access to places steeped in history that would otherwise remain closed. Unique stop-off experiences bring the enjoyment of local products closer.
Culinary delights ...
Which brings us to the subject of enjoyment - the enjoyment of home. Our credo: local products for sustainable and enjoyable food to identify with the region. We use almost exclusively regional products, supplied by local producers, the game comes from local hunts and the herbs come from our own herb garden.
In the warmer months, the café terrace by the goldfish and koi pond is a wonderful place to enjoy yourself, surrounded by pure nature. When the cold days arrive, the fireplace room with its crackling fire and cozy warmth is a popular place for like-minded people to meet and chat over a glass of wine or freshly tapped beer.
... and wellness
After a great day's touring, a relaxing massage to continue the process of calming down and slowing down. The "feel-good world" of the Forsthaus has been continuously awarded a lily and 13 points in the "Relax Guide" for its wellness treatments since 2007.
Alternatives to driving
If you want to give your car a break and be active and sporty in a different way, there is plenty on offer: How about riding on beautiful cycle paths with just two wheels for a change from four wheels? Whether you prefer to pedal yourself or use an e-bike, everyone can hire the right bike at the Forsthaus and ride along well-marked cycle paths.
Jog along a fitness trail through the beautiful mixed forest opposite or experience the thrill of heights in the climbing forest - fitness equipment is available free of charge at the TAO sports school 500 m away. Friends of the little white ball will find their challenge 25 km away on the 27-hole golf course of the oldest golf club in East Frisia in Wiesmoor or tee off in a castle atmosphere on the Schloss Lütetsburg golf course.
How did "Route 66" actually come about?
In 2006, Kalle Altmann (Windlooper Motorcycle Expeditions), Ingrid Hofmeister (Marketing + PR) and Joe Rahn (graphic designer + comic artist) sat down with Frank Köhler to plan further offers. It was the birth of Route 66 in L.A. A logo was developed, the routes off the beaten track to historic sites were defined - and last but not least, the national media and special interest magazines were invited. The response was fantastic, with "Die Welt" and others devoting three quarters of a page to the subject.
The success story has continued to this day and has been expanded with other tours for classic cars, convertibles, sports cars and motorcycles.
