In just four months' time, the 2018 Goodwood Motorsport season will kick off with the 76th Member's Meeting. Now Lord March's team has also announced the high-speed demonstration runs that will complement the full racing program.
For the fifth Club Racing Retrospective at Goodwood from March 17-18, 2018, a thundering grid of Formula 5000 single-seaters and modified Group 5 production sports cars will each take to the track.
Reunion with the Formula 5000 cars from 1969 to 1975
Expect to see a selection of Formula 5000 cars with chassis from Begg, Chevron, Eagle, Lola, March, McLaren, McRae, Surtees, Talon and Trojan, the majority of which are powered by Chevrolet's ubiquitous 5-liter V8.
The sight and sound of these racing cars brings back memories of the F5000 European Championship, which took place from 1969 to 1975. F1, F2 and Formula Atlantic cars were added in 1976, so the series lost its F5000 title.
During the seven F5000 seasons, racing took place on all the major British circuits. The visits to many European circuits such as Anderstorp, Hockenheim, Jyllandsringen, Koksijde, Monza, Mugello, Nivelles, Salzburgring, Zandvoort and Zolder then gave the series its European identity.
Group 5 sports cars from 1976
The Formula 5000 cars were joined by the Group 5 cars of the then World Sportscar Championship as the second high-speed demonstration. These were largely modified production cars that were built from 1976 due to a change in the regulations.
The cars with the turbocharged six-cylinder engine from Porsche dominated at that time, also used by the works team from 1976. From 1977, private teams also drove the Porsche 935. The distinctive 935 with the flat nose won dozens of times in various categories and even won the Daytona 24h race and the Sebring 12h race in its last world championship season in 1981.
The 935s will be accompanied at the 17th Member's Meeting by other Group 5 exotics, including the BMW 320 Group 5, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, the Ferrari 512 BB/LM and the Ford Zakspeed Turbo
