The RM/Sotheby's auction only takes place every two years in the park of Villa Erba on the occasion of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. On May 25, 2019, the time has come again and 53 cars will parade in front of the eager bidders, motivating them to make high bids. This will be necessary, as each car was valued at an average of around EUR 773,700 (CHF 874,000), with a total value of around EUR 39.5 million (CHF 44.6 million).
From ten decades
51 years is the average age, but this figure cannot characterize the breadth of the range.
The oldest car is an Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Landaulet from 1924, the youngest a still virginal Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake from 2019.
The fifties and sixties are particularly well represented, while the pre-war fraction is represented by eight cars. With 12 cars that are not yet classic cars, the future classics segment is relatively poorly represented.
The Ferrari 500 Mondial racing sports car
The Ferrari 500 Mondial on offer with bodywork by Pinin Farina from 1954 is one of only five such Barchettas with covered headlights. It has a relatively short racing history and was recently extensively overhauled.
It remains to be seen whether all this is enough to pull EUR 4.25 to 4.75 million out of an interested buyer's pocket.
Strong presence in Italy
Almost half of the cars were built in Italy.
Alfa Romeo, Maserati and, of course, Ferrari are particularly well represented.
Ferrari is missing the super classics like the Daytona or 275 GTB, as well as the entire seventies and eighties, but the 250 GT, 250 GT/E and 330 GTC are on offer.
For Maserati enthusiasts, the 3500 GT is available as a Touring Coupé and as a Vignale Spyder. These are joined by a yellow Ghibli 4.7 Spyder, built by the factory according to the catalog, but later converted from automatic to five-speed manual transmission (EUR 500,000 to 600,000).
A Maserati Trofeo Light from 2004 completes the Modena range.
Zagato variety
The Italian coachbuilder and designer Zagato is of course also part of Italian automotive history and RM/Sotheby's was able to gather nine of these rare creations for the auction in the park of Villa Erba.
Highlights are certainly the Maserati A6G/2000 as a Zagato-Berlinetta from 1955, which wants to find a new owner for EUR 3 to 3.5 million.
The 1955 Fiat 8V Zagato Coupé is also sure to fetch a high price, with an estimate of EUR 1.6 to 1.8 million.
There is also a Fiat-Abarth 750 GT from 1959 (EUR 100,000 to 120,000), a Lancia Flaminia Super Sport 3C 2.8 Zagato from 1966 (EUR 230,000 to 280,000) and a Ferrari 330 GTC with Zagato bodywork (EUR 425,000 to 475,000).
There are still some Aston Martin creations from the modern era from the house of Zagato.
Many super classics, of course
In addition to those already mentioned, Cernobbio, where Villa Erba is located, will be hosting another Superclassic on 25. May 2019 in Cernobbio, where Villa Erba is located, there will be other super classics for sale, such as a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1963 (EUR 1.4 to 1.6 million), a Lamborghini 400 GT 2+" from 1967 (EUR 425,000 to 475,000), a Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 liter roadster from 1962 (EUR 190'000 to 250,000) and two certainly not everyday Porsches, namely a 356 A Speedster from 1957 (EUR 325,000 to 375,000) and an even rarer 550A Spyder from 1957 (EUR 3.4 to 3.8 million).
Special exotics
In addition to the well-known auction classics, some particularly rare sports cars are sure to attract a lot of interest.
One of the few Pegaso Z102s from the second series with touring coupé bodywork from 1955 came under the hammer with an estimate of EUR 550,000 to 700,000, which almost seems like a bargain given its rarity.
The Delahaye 135 MS Coupé with Hebmüller bodywork, which was valued at EUR 250,000 to 350,000, is truly unique.
The Lancia Aurelia as a B52 Coupé with Vignale bodywork from 1952, which was given an estimate of EUR 325,000 to 375,000, is also almost a unique piece.
And there are also only a few examples of the ASA 1000 GT Coupé, which is expected to fetch EUR 125,000 to 175,000.
