There are certainly many approaches to a car collection. One American preferred white-painted Porsche sports cars and is now putting them back on the market as part of an RM/Sotheby's auction. He did not remain completely true to his central theme, because in addition to 55 Porsches and 2 Porsche tractors, five cars from other brands will also go under the hammer on December 1 and 2, 2023 in Houston (TX). And because around 500 automobiles are also to be sold, the auction will last two days.
The total value of the 62 vehicles on offer was estimated at USD 31.48 million, and on average they are just under 38 years old. Three quarters of the vehicles (48) will be sold without a reserve price.
Almost all white
White has always been a popular paint finish at Porsche, much like red at Ferrari. Some models were even available exclusively in white.
If you also count ivory or gray as white, then almost all Porsche sports cars on offer are actually "white", with the exception of a Porsche 356 Pre-A Coupé from 1953.
And of course the two tractors are also red. With one exception, the other makes do not adhere to the color specification either.
Not all 911s
The Porsche models are dominated by rear-engined cars. 45 911 derivatives and six 356s represent the classic Porsche architecture.
Among the early 356 models, there are two Carrera models and a 356 A Speedster.
Four transaxle models represent the 924-944-928 era. There is also a rare 924 with Martini decor and a 944 Turbo Cup.
Not all Porsche
The non-Porsche camp is made up of a 1925 Kleinschnittger F-125 Roadster (in white, after all), a 1968 Kellison Sandpiper Roadster in buggy style, two pre-war Ford models and a 1955 Volkswagen Beetle Custom "Frog Guts".
Not just cars, on the contrary
However, it is not the 62 vehicles that make up the bulk of the auction, but almost 500 Porsche-related automobilia. From car radios to posters, children's cars, seating arrangements, manuals, tool and case sets and spare parts, there is everything that could possibly be a good Christmas present for a Porsche fan. It's worth browsing through the extensive range.
High estimated values
Many of the cars on offer, especially the younger ones, have low mileages. In general, the cars appear to be in very good original condition or have been extensively restored. All this certainly justifies high expectations, especially as some of the Porsche sports cars on offer were only produced in very small series.
However, one wonders whether the bidders will really follow the recommendations when a 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 was estimated at USD 900,000 to 1.2 million and its lightweight brother even at USD 1.75 to 2 million.
The most expensive car is expected to be a 918 from 2015 (USD 2.5 to 3 million), followed by a certainly very rare 3.0 RS from 1974 (USD 2.25 to 2.75 million).
Not complete?
Apparently, only part of the collection will be auctioned on December 1 and 2, 2023. Anyone looking through the lot list will quickly find a few gaps that a passionate collector should have filled. For example, the Porsche 959 or the Carrera GT are conspicuous by their absence. But an early 928 or a 968 are not part of the range either. And an early 911 ST would certainly have fitted in well too ...
Further information and pictures of the cars and automobilia can be seen on the RM/Sotheby's website.
