RM/Sotheby's has been organizing an auction in London (almost) every year for almost 20 years. This year there will even be two, on November 1-2, 2024. At the Peninsula in London, 60 automobiles and two historic 2-/3-wheelers will go under the hammer alongside over 100 automobiles for the London-to-Brighton Run.
The value of the vehicles has been estimated at £33.6 million or 551,000 per lot. 39% of the vehicles will be sold without a reserve price.
Aston Martin, Bentley and Ferrari
Three brands account for more than half of the offer, namely Aston Martin with 14 vehicles, Bentley with 13 and Ferrari with 7 sports cars.
While the Bentleys are quite old, with an average age of 79 years, the Ferrari range is rather younger, with an average age of 43 years.
62% of the Bentleys and 43% of the Astons are offered without a minimum price, including seven restoration objects.
66 years old on average
With an average age of 66 years, the vehicles tend to be older on average than at other auctions.
The reason for this is the relatively high pre-war proportion of 18 lots (30 %), including two very early vehicles from De Dion-Bouton and a Haynes-Apperson as well as an Oldsmobile Model R "Curved Dash", all older than 120 years.
The proportion of neo or future classics built after 1994 is relatively low, with only six, including a McLaren Senna GTR LM from 2002, which at £ 1.6 to 2 million is one of the most expensive cars in the auction.
The XKSS
At £9 to 11 million, the 1957 Jaguar XKSS with chassis number XKD 540 is set to become the most expensive car in the auction. According to RM/Sotheby's, it is a particularly important XKSS and is also the first to appear at auction in Europe.
The car was born as the D-Type and was not sold until 1957, when it was converted into the XKSS in October 1958. The car has a racing history and complete documentation.
Famous racing cars
Only two factory racing cars of the 135 S type were built by Delahaye in the 1930s, chassis 47188 from 1936 is one of them. The car finished eighth at Le Mans in 1939, but its entire racing history is even more impressive.
The car belonged to Rob Walker for a long time and was also driven by Prince Bira, among others. Now £ 1 to 1.5 million is expected.
The MG K3 from 1934 with chassis number K3016 is somewhat less expensive, but at least as famous. It was part of the works team at the 34 Mille Miglia and is considered to be one of the most original K3s in existence. £ 600,000 to £ 800,000 is expected to change hands in exchange for this car.
Super classics in large numbers
The number of super classics at the RM/Sotheby's London auction is of course extensive.
14 Aston Martins represent the English sports car manufacturer. Two DB4s, two DB5s and a DB6 are on offer, supplemented by five cars from the DB2 generation and two V8 Vantages as well as two newer examples.
Ferrari is also well represented with a 250 GT Lusso, a 275 GTB from 1965, a 330 GTC, a 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1971 as well as a F40 from 1989 (£ 1.85 to 2 million) and a Testarossa. The Dino 246 GTS could also be included here.
A 300 SL Gullwing from 1954 and a 280 SL Pagoda from Mercedes-Benz are among the vehicles coming under the hammer.
At Bentley, the pre-war models of the 3 1/2- to 4 1/4-liter generation predominate. However, two R-Types and three S1/S2 derivatives will also go under the hammer.
There is also an E-Type and a Mark 2 from Jaguar.
A rarity is the 1994 Honda NSX-R. Only 483 examples were produced exclusively for the Japanese market. They are slightly more powerful and somewhat lighter than the normal examples. RM has set the price at £ 230,000 to £ 290,000.
Restoration objects
If you want to work on the car yourself or have a large restoration budget, we recommend taking a look at the restoration objects.
Three Aston-Martins (two DB2s and one DB6) and four Bentleys (three 3 1/2-litre and one 4 1/4-litre) are available and require more or less effort to complete. Prices range from £30,000 to £250,000 depending on condition and rarity.
Further information and many pictures of the cars can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
