Marlborough House, built in 1711, will host an RM/Sotheby's auction on November 4, 2023. Located in the heart of Pall Mall, Marlborough House will provide the perfect backdrop for the auction of 62 cars and a variety of automobilia.
This is not RM's first auction in London, in fact the auction house has already gone under the hammer 16 times in the Thames city. However, this is only the second auction as part of the "London to Brighton Run".
The 62 cars (including an F1 show car) represent a combined value of £23.6 million, so around £380,000 per car is expected.
Especially Ferrari
Of the 62 cars, which are on average 51 years old, almost half - exactly 27 - are from Ferrari. Bentley follows in the brand rankings with six, followed by Aston Martin with five and Porsche and Mercedes-Benz with four cars each.
A total of just 18 brands are represented in London, including a few well-known ones such as Amilcar, Frazer Nash and Avion Voisin.
Mostly super classics
Actually, almost all of the cars on offer could be considered super classics, but even with a narrower definition of the term, 2/3 to 3/4 of the cars belong to this category.
Several Aston Martin from the DB series, Bentley from the pre- and post-war period, two Lancia B20 GTs, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing and a Maserati Mistral Spyder from 1967 should serve as examples here.
Scarcely driven Ferrari sports cars
The cars with lot numbers 226 to 245 are worth mentioning. They come from the so-called "Factory Fresh Collection", which already indicates that they must be almost brand-new vehicles.
In fact, most of these cars have very low mileages and some have never even been registered on the road, which could well lead to problems with a new registration, depending on the situation.
Most of these cars are Ferrari sports cars, but there are also two Jaguars, including an XJ220 from 1993) and a Bentley Turbo R from 1991.
The estimates are set quite high, and right-hand drive should not be a problem for buyers.
Of course, there are a few exceptions to the "Factory Fresh", especially with the older cars, such as the Dino 246 GTS from 1973, which has been partially restored. However, this car also lacks registration papers.
The other Ferrari
In addition to the 17 Ferrari sports cars in the "Factory Fresh Collection", there are others from Maranello, such as the 1988 Testarossa, which Nigel Mansell drove in his first year at Ferrari and which has now been estimated at £ 150,000 to £ 200,000.
There is also a Ferrari 250 GT Coupé from 1960, a 250 GT/L from 1963, a Daytona Plexi from 1969, to name a few examples, and a Dino 206 GT from 1968, estimated at £ 350,000 to £ 400,000.
And of course there is also a 1990 F40 (£ 1.9 to 2.1 million).
Offside the well-known classics
All five Aston Martin cars are from the DB4-DB6 era. These include a DB5 restoration project, but also a DB4 Convertible from 1963, which is in the lot list for £ 1.2 to 1.6 million.
Apart from Porsche, represented by a 356 A Speedster from 1957, a 911 Turbo from 1977 and two more recent cars from the 996 era, some of the exotic cars on offer are particularly interesting.
An Amilcar C6 from 1927, at the time a competitor to the Bugatti 35, is said to be for sale for a reasonable £150,000 to £200,000 and, like 39% of all cars, offered without a reserve price.
Two Avion Voisin from 1925 and 1931 are looking for new owners.
A 2003 BMW M3 CSL (E46) is announced for £55,000 to £75,000 with no reserve price.
A Lagonda LG45 from 1936 and a Frazer Nash Targa Florio from 1952 represent British automotive craftsmanship.
And a 1994 Nissan Skyline GT-R (£225,000 to £275,000) is likely to attract the Playstation generation to the auction.
The RM/Sotheby's offer is interesting despite the narrow range of brands, especially if you are interested in Ferrari. However, prospective buyers should check carefully whether the steering wheel is mounted on the right side for them and whether road registration is possible in their own country without any problems. Customs and tax regulations should also be carefully verified before placing a bid. However, these issues are probably not an issue with two lots, a Ferrari F310 show car from 1996 and a Benz Patent-Motorwagen (replica) "from 1886" ...
Further information and many pictures of the cars can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
