Every two years, RM/Sotheby's organizes an exclusive auction in the park of Villa Erba and in the "shadow" of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. On May 27, 2017, the time has come again and RM's scouts have put together an impressive collection of vehicles.
Motorcycles, a ship and 45 automobiles
In keeping with the motorcycle concours also taking place, 20 motorcycles will also go under the hammer. The Riva boat is not to be missed either, but the focus here is on the 45 automobiles, which also make up the bulk of the total estimate, as they cost over EUR 1 million on average.
15 brands with a focus on the fifties/sixties
There are cars from 15 brands that will be in the spotlight on the evening of May 27. On average, they are 42 years old, with the majority (18 cars) dating from the 1950s and 1960s.
An impressive 15 cars can be described as youngtimers or neoclassics, the pre-war share of four cars is small but interesting!
Some of the most beautiful pre-war cars
There may only be four of them, but these pre-war sports cars make the connoisseur's mouth water.
The Mercedes-Benz 680 S with Saoutchik bodywork from 1928 recently won at Pebble Beach, while the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS from 1930 is one of the best sports cars in the world.The Bugatti 57 Atalante from 1935 and the Talbot-Lago T150-C SS Figoni et Falaschi in the shape of a drop of water are among the most beautiful designs that were realized on four wheels before the Second World War.
According to RM/Sotheby's, the four cars together represent a value of around EUR 16 million. And they still say that pre-war cars are no longer in demand.
Never raced, never driven
The secret star of this auction is certainly a Porsche 964 RSR from 1993. The racing car was bought at the time by an enthusiast with many comfort attributes that you wouldn't really expect to find in a racing car, but before the tires could spin on a race track, the car ended up in the catacombs of a car collection, still valued by the delivery wax layer "Cosmoline".
So now it is being offered for EUR 2.0 to 2.2 million with 10 kilometers on the clock, but certainly with a whole series of damage. As one of only 51 Carrera RSRs produced at the time, it is sure to find a new fan.
Especially Ferrari
15 of the 45 cars bear the Ferrari horse in the brand logo, only Porsche with six and Lamborghini with four cars otherwise make up a larger contingent.
The Ferrari sports cars on offer represent a nice cross-section of the brand's 70-year history, starting with a 250 GT Series II from 1960 through to the LaFerrari from 2014 and the F12 TDF from 2016. Of course, neither an F40, nor a Dino 2046 or a 365 GTB/4 Daytona are missing. The estimated prices? Certainly at the upper end of the current market, with the Dino 206 GT, for example, expected to fetch around EUR 550,000 to 600,000.
Racing stories
It is not only road vehicles that will thunder through the park of Villa Erba, but also racing cars, first and foremost, or almost as the crowning glory, a W.R.E. Maserati from 1959. The ravishing Barchetta is one of three examples built and was able to adorn itself with several successes in Italy. EUR 750,000 to 950,000 seems quite realistic for this elegant racing car.
The 1961 Jaguar E-Type, which once competed in Angola and Portugal, also proved its worth in racing. Completely restored, there is little to remind us of its successful racing days, but even so, the E-Type is an eye-catcher, albeit with a correspondingly high estimate of EUR 250,000 to 300,000.
Many special bodies
Another typical feature of the Concorso is certainly the high proportion of special bodies and former salon exhibition vehicles. Vignale, for example, gave us the elegant Lancia Aurelia B52 2000 Coupé in 1952, Franay an attractive Talbot-Lago T26 Cabriolet in 1948 and Bentley a Sports Saloon based on the Bentley R-Type Continental for the 1953 Geneva Motor Show. The pre-war cars have already been mentioned.
The program is supplemented by some super classics, but also exotic cars such as the Aston Martin V8 Vantage from Zagato in coupé and spider form. And the Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, one of only a few road-going versions of the Group B racer produced, should not go unmentioned. Neither should its "brother" Audi Sport Quattro, which was built with similar intentions.
