From August 13 to 15, 2026, the Portola Hotel and the Monterey Conference Center will host a three-day auction in which RM Sotheby’s will offer 194 vehicles, as well as several children’s cars, with a total value of approximately USD 353 million.
On average, each full-scale vehicle is valued at about USD 1.8 million, even with five motorcycles included in the auction.
The vehicles are nearly 54 years old on average, and 30% will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
Ferrari, Porsche, and the Others
Twenty-nine Ferraris (including Dinos) and 29 Porsches dominated the auction, followed by twelve Mercedes-Benzes and ten Aston Martins. Bugatti, Lamborghini, and McLaren are each represented by nine cars, while eight Rolls-Royces and six Delahayes are set to be sold.
A total of 59 brands are featured, including nearly forgotten manufacturers such as Cord, Mercer, Tucker, and Vector.
While 52% of the Porsche sports cars are being offered without a reserve price, the figure is 34% for Ferrari and 33% for Mercedes-Benz. In contrast, all Aston Martin, Bugatti, and Lamborghini cars have reserve prices set for a successful bid.
A Bodybuilder’s Paradise
A hallmark of the auctions in the Pebble Beach area is the high proportion of pre-war vehicles.
Nearly a quarter date from the decades before World War II. The number of cars that were built by external coachbuilders is correspondingly large.
About 30 such “carrossiers” appear in the RM auction in Monterey, including Chapron, Pinin Farina, and Zagato, as well as Figoni et Falaschi, Franay, Vignale, Allemano, and Gangloff. Even little-known coachbuilders such as Merrimac, Jaquot, and Schapiro-Schebera are represented.
Most of these cars are one-of-a-kind and correspondingly expensive; prices can even run into the millions.
Racing Gems
The selection of race cars is also quite extensive; after all, Laguna Seca is nearby, and the motorsports weekend there is part of Monterey Car Week.
Typical American race cars include the 1961 Balchowsky Ol’ Yaller Mk VII, but also Chevrolet Corvette derivatives such as the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport (estimated at USD 11 to 13 million), the 1960 Corvette LM, or the 1968 Corvette L88 RED/NART Le Mans.
Racing cars from the pre-war era will also go under the hammer, such as a 1927 Bugatti Type 35 A Grand Prix or a 1937 Delahaye 135 Grand Prix.
More recent models include the 1964 Elva-Porsche Mk VII S, the 1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato (estimated value: $12 to 15 million), and the 1979 Ferrari 512 BB/LM.
All Ferrari Supercars
Anyone looking to build a collection of Ferrari supercars and hypercars—most of which were produced in very limited numbers—will find a wide selection at RM in Monterey.
From the 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO (USD 9 to 11 million), to the 1991 F40 (USD 4 to 5 million), the 1995 F50 (USD 7 to 9 million), a 2003 Ferrari Enzo (USD 6.75 to 7.5 million), and a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari (USD 5 to 6 million).
These Ferrari models are all worth millions, but are still less expensive than the brand-new 2023 Ferrari Daytona SP3 (SD 10 to 12 million).
Of course, the super classics featuring the prancing horse are also included, even if the selection has been larger in previous years. Among the cars set to go under the hammer are a 1953 Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale (USD 900,000 to 1.2 million), a 1958 250 GT Cabriolet Series I with Pininfarina bodywork (USD 4 to 5 million), and a 1972 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider (USD 2 to 3 million).
Nearly the Entire Lamborghini Lineup
Lamborghini also offers nearly its entire lineup spanning over 60 years of history.
From the 1965 350 GT, through a very early 1967 Miura P400, to the 2021 Sián FKP 37, nearly all of Sant’Agata’s famous sports cars’Agata will be on display, with the exception of the eight-cylinder models and the GT-oriented front-engine cars from the 1970s and 1980s.
Porsche Selection with a Focus on the 911
In addition to five Porsche 356s, Porsche’s sports car lineup consists almost exclusively of 911 variants, with the exception of a 1955 550 Spyder (USD 3.25 to 3.75 million) and a 2010 Cayman S, and if one also interprets the 1989 959 Sport (USD 5 to 6 million) as a 911.
Several 911 Speedster variants are also included, as well as a 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring (USD 700,000 to 900,000).
Five 300 SLs
Anyone interested in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL can choose from five examples at RM. The estimated prices for the two Gullwing models and three roadsters range from USD 1.1 to 2.6 million.
In this context, one shouldn’t forget the 300 SL’s rival from that era, the BMW 507. A 1958 convertible model of this car is also available for between USD 2 and 2.5 million
Colorful and Valuable
Incidentally, the most expensive car at the auction is not expected to be one of the Ferraris or rare pre-war gems, but rather a 1996 McLaren F1 GTR with chassis number 10R.
The experts at RM expect a winning bid in excess of USD 35 million for the F1 that once belonged to Nick Mason, which not only participated in the Le Mans qualifying session in 1996, but also features a very rare specification, including its eye-catching factory paint job, which earned it the nickname “The Pop Art F1.”
Plenty of Exotic Cars
There is no shortage of exotic cars at the RM auction, even if you exclude Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and other brands.
Among the cars going under the hammer are a 1948 Tucker 48 (USD 1 to 1.3 million), a 1999 Vector SRV8 (USD 350,000 to 450,000), a 2018 RUF CTR3 Clubsport (USD 1.7 to 1.9 million), and a 2025 Czinger 21C (USD 2.3 to 2.5 million).
Also the 1988 Cizeta-Moroder V16T prototype (USD 1.4 to 1.8 million) and the 1966 Pininfarina Dino 206 GT prototype (USD 3.0 to 3.5 million) certainly belong in this category.
More of a curiosity is a very special VW Beetle, which certainly made headlines back then and is sure to be a source of wonder at any event today.
And perhaps the Ferrari Luce should also be classified among the exotic cars at the moment, as the car on offer is the first production model of the first electric sports car from Maranello; here, too, no fixed estimate is given, but a minimum of USD 1.1 million is expected.
The selection is extensive, and for the first time, the auction will last three days. As always in and around Monterey, the estimates are at the upper end of what seems achievable elsewhere, and without a deep pocket, one probably shouldn’t venture into the bidding war—even given the significant proportion of no-reserve lots. After all, the U.S. dollar is currently worth significantly less than the euro or the Swiss franc.
All vehicles, complete with numerous photos and descriptions, can be found on the RM Sotheby’s website.
