RM/Sotheby's is calling the exclusive auction "New York - Icons", which is set to make bidders around USD 55 million (EUR 46 million, CHF 53.8 million) poorer on December 6, 2017. And we are only talking about the cars on offer here, the wines, works of art and cars cost extra, so to speak.
When even a racing train costs hundreds of thousands ...
Even before the cars, an old Le Mans kilometer sign (USD 30,000 to 50,000) and a racing suit and helmet will be auctioned off. The items were worn during the filming of Steve McQueen's movie "Le Mans". They were auctioned off by the German magazine "Bravo" to mark the launch of the film. The winner of the second prize was more than disappointed at the time, as the first prize would have been a VW Porsche 914. Naturally, a worn racing overall and underwear were not much fun. At least the helmet could be used to ride a scooter, which the winner did after he had sprayed it on.
Apparently, the items have now reappeared after 46 years and, if the estimated price of USD 400,000 to 500,000 can actually be realized, they should prove to be a much better investment than the VW Porsche that did not win at the time.
A Ferrari for 15 million
If an item of clothing costs almost half a million, how expensive are cars? An average of around USD 1.7 million per vehicle is expected. The Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider from 1959 makes a big contribution here, as it is expected to cost USD 14 to 17 million.
This is a Competizione version that competed in the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans and finished fifth overall with practically zero kilometers on the clock. Interested parties should note that this valuable car cannot be purchased at auction on the Internet.
Jaguar C-Type
The Jaguar XK 120C from 1952, once driven by Phil Hill, also has an impressive racing history. The estimate is USD 5.5 to 7 million.
Special bodies by Franay and Saoutchik
For fans of elegant coachwork, two French special bodies are coming under the hammer. The Cadillac Series 62 was clothed in a convertible body by Saoutchik in 1948 and was definitely born for the catwalk.
However, the estimate of USD 850,000 to 1.0 million shows that such cars are much less sought after than the sports cars of those years.
The Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback from 1954 is somewhat more expensive and has a body by Franay, with a price tag of USD 1 to 1.3 million.
A little pre-war romance
Two cars from the pre-war era will go under the hammer in New York: a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Riviera Town Car with a Brewster body was estimated at USD 500,000 to 700,000, while the 1932 Marmon Sixteen Convertible coupé by Baron is said to be worth USD 1 to 1.2 million.
Valuable Integrale
A Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evoluzione from 1992 is also expected to be surprisingly expensive, with an estimate of USD 175,000 to 225,000.
However, this still makes it one of the cheapest cars in the auction, as only the 1953 Piaggio Ape Calessino three-wheeler is more wallet-friendly with an estimate of USD 50,000 to 80,000.
Auction classics are not missing
Of course, the auction classics are not missing in New York, they are almost all there.
Two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs (a Gullwing and a Roadster), a Ferrari Daytona, an Aston Martin DB5 Convertible, a Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2 Litre Roadster or a Porsche 911 from 1966 - there is hardly an important car missing from the lot list.
(Almost) new cars
13 cars are still veritable youngtimers, i.e. they have not yet reached the age of 30. This does not make them cheap.
Steve Jobs' BMW Z8 is said to cost USD 300,000 to 400,000, the 2004 Porsche Carrera GT was estimated at USD 775,000 to 850,000. And a practically new Bugatti Chiron is listed in the catalog at USD 3.5 to 4 million.
In general, the estimated values show a lot of self-confidence on the part of the auction organizers; whether the bidders can support this will be seen on December 6, 2017. After all, 1/3 of the vehicles are listed without a reserve price, so perhaps it will be a little cheaper than expected.
