The first auctions of the new year are eagerly awaited. The auctions in Scottsdale/Arizona will kick off the year 2022.
RM/Sotheby's will bring 68 automobiles (plus a motorcycle and some automobilia) under the hammer on January 27, 2022.
The 68 cars represent a value of around USD 43 million, with each car expected to fetch an average of USD 637,000. The average age of the cars is 47 years, 41 percent of which will be auctioned without a reserve price.
Ferrari, Mercedes, Porsche and ...
14 of the cars on offer bear the Ferrari trademark, 13 the Porsche trademark and 10 the Mercedes-Benz trademark. This means that these three brands already account for more than half of the cars on offer.
The remaining vehicles are spread across 25 other brands, including exotic manufacturers such as Apollo, Cizeta, Cord, Devin and Iso.
Six pre-war vehicles
Cars manufactured before the Second World War make up only a minority of the RM auction.
However, three of them are special and exceptional vehicles, namely a 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I (USD 200,000 to 250,000), a 1930 Cadillac V-16 Sport Phaeton (USD 900,000 to 1.1 million) and a 1931 Duesenberg Model J Tourster (USD 2.75 to 3.25 million).
These are joined by two Fords and a Cord 812 Supercharged convertible from 1937 (USD 200,000 to 250,000).
Exotic cars
Among the particularly rare cars are three incomparable sports cars.
There is the Apollo 3500 GT from 1963, which was one of 41 cars originally built and one of the few to be equipped with an automatic transmission. Restored around 2010, the sports car is now expected to cost USD 125,000 to 145,000, but will be auctioned without a reserve price.
The Devin C from 1959 will probably be considerably cheaper. It is nevertheless a relatively famous car, as this open-top sports car with a Corvair six-cylinder engine was honored with an article in Sports Car Graphic. In addition, the car - only 21 of these Devin Cs were built - took part in racing and speed events at the time.
The asking price is now USD 70,000 to 90,000, but it could also be cheaper, as there is no minimum price.
Even rarer than Devin and Apollo is the 1988 Cizeta-Moroder V16 T. This is the prototype that was also depicted in sales literature and shown at motor shows at the time.
Chassis 001 differs in some respects from the later production vehicles, of which there are only around a dozen.
Seen in this light, the expected USD 900,000 to 1.2 million for the 16-cylinder mid-engined sports car does not seem excessive.
Many super classics from the fifties and sixties
Almost exactly half of the cars on offer were built in the fifties to early seventies.
Many super classics can also be found here, such as three Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs (two gullwing models), a Porsche 356 A Speedster, two Lancia open B24s, a Ferrari 275 GTB and a Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2.
The Ferrari 330 GTC Speciale from 1966 is certainly something very special. It differs from the standard models in that it has folding fog lights, among other things, and is one of six "Speciale" cars built and is now expected to cost USD 700,000 to 900,000.
The most expensive car in the auction, however, is the 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider from 1971, which is estimated at USD 2.4 to 2.8 million.
Super sports cars from the recent past
Around a third of the vehicles on offer are less than 25 years old.
Some of Porsche's most sought-after super sports cars can be found here, such as a 959 Komfort from 1987, a Carrera GT from 2005 and a 918 Spyder from 2015.
The 2012 Lexus LFA, which has not yet taken off in terms of price at USD 650,000 to 750,000 and is even offered without a minimum price, also fits into the same group.
However, an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Volante from 2003 and a Ferrari 430 Scuderia from 2009 are also on offer.
A Ford GT from 2019 (USD 950,000 to 1.15 million) is not missing either, but the youngest car is even younger, as the Ford Shelby GT500, which is also being auctioned, was only built in 2021.
More information and many pictures of the individual cars can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
