John Dixon was certainly not your average car collector. He fell in love with the Porsche brand back in his high school days and began collecting anything he found interesting shortly afterwards. However, his love also spread to the Volkswagen brand, which ultimately formed the basis for the first Porsche models.
Over time, a considerable collection of automobilia and vehicles came together, which RM/Sotheby's auctioned on September 28, 2019 on behalf of Dixon's wife.
33 vehicles off the beaten track
A total of 33 vehicles will go under the hammer, ranging from a BMW motorcycle with a VW engine to various Porsche and Volkswagen models and individual items that simply have something to do with Volkswagen and Porsche.
Hundreds of automobiles will also come under the hammer, including many a find.
All without a minimum price
In total, the vehicles represent a value of almost USD 6 million, so an average of USD 172,000 is expected per lot. However, there is generally no reserve price, which means that the cars can also be sold for significantly less.
The most expensive is a Porsche 356 A Carrera GT Speedster from 1957, with an estimated value of USD 1.5 to 2 million.
However, Dixon's collection can also be started with a BMW motorcycle with a Volkswagen boxer engine from 1967 or a Porsche tractor from 1960.
Originals and the bizarre
The breadth of the spectrum is typical of Dixon's collection.
There are rare original vehicles such as the Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Clubsport from 1981 (USD 250,000 to 350,000) or the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 (USD 400,000 to 450,000), but also quirky projects such as a long Porsche 356 limousine from 1958 (USD 100,000 to 150,000) or the VW Beetle Outlaw "Death" by Franz Muhr from 1956 (USD 40,000 to 60,000).
A look at the catalog is certainly not only worthwhile for VW and Porsche enthusiasts.
More information and pictures of the vehicles can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
