For the first time, RM Sotheby's is organizing an auction in Milan, one of the most historically memorable and beautiful cities in Europe. On May 22, 2025, 38 automobiles worth almost EUR 36 million will go under the hammer at the Fonderia Macchi Carl near the city center. With an average value of over EUR 900,000, exclusivity is guaranteed.
Only European makes
On average, the cars are a good 47 years old and they all come from Europe. Seven Porsche, five Ferrari, five Mercedes-Benz, four Aston Martin and three Lamborghini make up a good two thirds of the range, while more exotic brands such as Cisitalia, Facel Vega and Autobianchi are each represented by one car.
Only three cars are being offered without a reserve price, including what is probably the most expensive car in the auction, the 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400, for which an estimate of over EUR 3.2 million has been given.
Mercedes-Benz siblings
The specialists at RM Sotheby's in Milan are offering those who are struggling to decide whether they would prefer to own the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL as a gullwing or a roadster the choice.
A silver-colored coupé from 1956 is on offer for EUR 1.7 to 2.1 million, a blue roadster from 1962 for EUR 1.8 to 2.2 million and a black gullwing from 1954 for EUR 1.15 to 1.5 million.
If you are more into modern fast star carriers and want to be able to choose between open and closed versions, we recommend the black and white CLK DTM AMG pair. The two cars with the DTM look cost between EUR 325,000 and 425,000.
Three very special Alfa Romeos
For Alfa fans, there are three famous cars with straight-six and eight-cylinder engines.
The oldest of the three is a 6C Gran Sport Spider with Zagato bodywork from 1930, estimated at EUR 1.3 to 1.5 million.
Significantly more money is expected for an 8C 2300 as a Lungo Cabriolet by Pinin Farina from 1932. The estimate here was EUR 3.5 to 4.5 million.
In comparison, the post-war convertible 6C 2500 Super Sport with Pinin-Farina bodywork from 1949 appears downright cheap at EUR 300,000 to 350,000.
Low-comfort Porsche
Some very fast 911 coupé derivatives come from a "fast" collection, among which the 911 Carrera RS 3.0 from 1974 is the most expensive at EUR 1 to 1.5 million.
Alternatives include a 993 Cup 3.8 RSR from 1998 or a 996 GT3 Cup, but also a 993 GT2 R from 1997 or a 996 GT3 RS from 2002.
Anyone who would like to have a different horse on the hood and is a fan of Michele Alboreto should take a look at the Ferrari F355 from 1995 as a coupé, as the car belonged to the F1 Ferrari driver even before he drove for the Scuderia. EUR 150,000 to 190,000 are expected to change hands for the six-speed manual coupe.
Super rarities
Only 10 Cisitalia 500 DFs were built, one for the Swiss racing driver Fritz Stolz.
Bodied by Ghia, the coupé was completely restored in 2011 and is now expected to cost EUR 200,000 to 240,000.
The Abarth-Simca 2000 Corsa, an early example from 1964, is also very rare and can now be purchased for EUR 440,000 to 540,000.
The Jaguar XJ 220 is also an exotic car. The blue car on offer is the 48th XJ 220 built and is trying to find a new owner for EUR 375,000 to 450,000.
At 399 units, slightly more of the BMW M1 were built than the 281 XJ 220s, but the Munich plastic coupé is of course also a rarity. At EUR 425,000 to 525,000, even more money is expected here than for the Jaguar.
The Ferrari 365 GTC may look like a 330 GTC, but with 150 coupés built, it is even rarer than its predecessor. Chassis 11981 from 1969 is now expected to fetch EUR 650,000 to 750,000.
The Porsche 959 was only converted into a Speedster once. Karl-Heinz Feustel was responsible for this, using an '87 Coupé as the basis. The conversion had only a limited impact on the value of the car, and now it is hoped that bids of between EUR 1 and 1.5 million will be placed.
21 Maserati A6G/54 bodied Allemano, chassis 2175 was in the same ownership for a long time and is now going under the hammer for EUR 870,000 to 1.2 million.
Of course, this is by no means the end of the long line of rare automobiles; after all, only 157 Facel IIs with left-hand drive were built by Facel Vega and 37 examples of the Aston Martin DB Short-Chassis Volante were built in the 1960s. And so on and so forth.
Of course, there is also no shortage of somewhat more popular super classics, such as a Ferrari Daytona, a Lamborghini Countach and a Ferrari 40. "Popularity" is just relative.
Only one car in the five-figure range
The only car for which one can hope not to have to bid a six-figure sum is the Autobianchi as Bianchia Furgoncino from 1967. The pretty estate car, which would certainly make a nice company car, is expected to cost EUR 30,000 to 40,000, although no minimum bid is required here.
Anyone willing to spend even less will probably have to make do with a Michael Schuzmacher racing overall, a Ferrari suitcase set or another of the eight Automobilia lots.
More information on the individual vehicles and lots of photos can be found on the RM Sotheby's website.
