Three days are needed to bring the comprehensive range of classics that RM/Sotheby's has put together for the Monterey auctions from August 15 to 17, 2019 under the hammer.
A total of 184 cars are to be sold, plus a few automobilia and a children's vehicle.
The total value of the cars was estimated at over USD 210 million, with each car expected to fetch around USD 1.16 million (EUR 1.05 million, CHF 1.15 million).
79 cars will be sold without a reserve price, including a Ferrari 250 GT SWB from 1962, which was estimated at USD 8 to 10 million.
34 Aston Martin for 33 million
Anyone who would like to efficiently put together an Aston Martin with selected examples from the sports and luxury car company's oeuvre can do so on the first of the three days in Monterey, as Thursday is dedicated to the Astons. However, you should bring enough small change, because according to RM/Sotheby's, these 34 Aston Martins alone are worth almost USD 33 million. The spectrum ranges from USD 40,000 to USD 10.5 million.
Only the pre-war vehicles of the British brand are missing, otherwise there is hardly a large gap in the offer.
The DB3S works car from 1953, which was estimated at USD 8.75 to 10.5 million, is certainly one of the fillet pieces.
For movie buffs, the 1965 Bond DB5, equipped with the "usual refinements" as used in the movie Golfdinger and delivered at the time as one of four movie vehicles, might be worth considering, provided the estimated USD 4 to 6 million is not too daunting.
An Aston Martin DB4 GT from 1961 is also expected to be expensive, with an estimated value of USD 3 to 3.4 million.
Also rare are the (DB5/DB6) Short Chassis Volante from 1966 and the DB5 Convertible, both of which are estimated to cost around USD 1.5 million.
And then there would also be two Shooting Brakes up for auction, one built on the basis of a DB5 in 1965, the other based on the Aston Martin Lagonda from 1987.
Only 40 brands
In addition to Aston Martin, vehicles from 39 other brands are on offer. The most represented are Ferrari (30 cars, average age 35 years), Porsche (20 cars, average age 38 years) and Jaguar (13 cars, 49 years).
All other manufacturers can only be seen on site in single figures, some such as Alta, Citroën, Crosley, Delahaye, De Tomaso, Dual-Ghia, Duesenberg and a few more even with just one car each.
On average, one of the Ferraris on offer is said to cost USD 2.4 million, with Bentley (5 cars) costing an average of USD 1.2 million and Lancia (5 cars) an average of USD 527,000.
McLaren F1 still on the rise?
The most expensive car of the entire three-day auction is expected to be a McLaren F1. The car is one of two examples with factory Le Mans specification and was built in 1994 as one of only 64 road cars.
It was only driven 21,500 km. This abstinence is now expected to pay off with a price of USD 21 to 23 million, whereby according to RM/Sotheby's an undisclosed minimum price is guaranteed for the consignor.
Valuable Ferrari
Apart from the McLaren F1 LM Spec and the two Aston Martin DB3S and DB5 "Bond" mentioned above, the top ten list of the most valuable cars mainly includes sports and racing cars from Ferrari.
There is the 250 California SWB Spider from 1962, which is estimated at USD 10.5 to 13 million.
The 1962 Ferrari 195 SP (Fantuzzi) racing car is expected to be hardly less expensive, with an estimate of USD 8 to 10 million in the catalog.
The 375 MM with coupé bodywork by Ghia from 1955, which is to be sold to a new collector for USD 5 to 7 million, is certainly very special.
For fun, the 225 Sport Spider with Vignale-Barchetta bodywork from 1952 (USD 4 to 5 million) would certainly be a good choice.
There are also newer Ferraris for sale, such as the F40, F50, FXX or LaFerrari
Two Maserati 5000 GTs
The two Maserati 5000 GTs on offer at RM/Sotheby's are considerably cheaper than most Ferrari sports cars, but at the same time much more exclusive.
While the Michelotti version (chassis AM103 016) was estimated at just USD 700,000 to 850,000, the Ghia version (chassis AM103 018) is estimated at just USD 500,000 to 700,000.
It is important to note that only 34 5000 GTs were built in total and each one is essentially unique. Interested buyers should bear in mind, however, that the Ghia-5000 GT is a restoration object and the Michelotti Coupé could benefit from a "cosmetic refreshing" according to RM/Sotheby's.
But you can also buy a much more expensive trident in Monterey if you want a sportier look. The A6GCS with bodywork by Fiandri & Malagoli from 1954 (chassis 2078) was estimated at USD 3.25 to 3.75 million.
The most important Porsche of all time?
Three Type 64 Berlin-Rome Porsches were basically the first Porsche ever built in 1939; only one original has survived. The car that Professor Porsche once drove himself and which then belonged to the Austrian Otto Mathé for 46 years is so valuable that RM/Sotheby's did not even want to give an estimate.
Internet bidding is excluded as with other very expensive cars.
In comparison, the other Porsches naturally fall somewhat short, although of course a 718 RS 60 works car from 1960 is also a rarity and wants to be paid for at USD 5.75 to 7.75 million.
The Porsche offer is extensive and also includes a 911 Carrera RS Touring and two 2005 Carrera GTs.
Large Shelby range
The fast cars from Carroll Shelby are not only popular in the USA, no wonder they are well represented in Monterey.
Three Cobras worth between USD 825,000 and 1.5 million are on the lot list, supplemented by five Shelby Mustangs of the GT350 and GT500 types, including two Hertz cars.
However, the most valuable American car is not an actual Shelby, but a Ford GT40, which was produced for Shelby American. It is the first of five GT40 roadsters that was driven by Ken Miles, Carroll Shelby and Jim Clark, among others, and is probably the only one of the five open GT40s that has always driven in this form and survived.
However, USD 7 to 9 million is a confident price for this rarity.
Three Volkswagens at not quite popular prices
Three VWs go under the hammer in Monterey on the second and third day, a Beetle (USD 40,000 to 60,000), a Type 181 (USD 25,000 to 35,000) and a Samba bus (USD 155,000-195,000).
With these prices, however, the three seem less popular than, for example, the Crosley CD Super Station Wagon from 1951 (USD 15,000 to 20,000) or the Alfa Romeo Giulietta TI Berlina from 1959 for USD 40,000 to 50,000.
The Porsche 914 2.0 from 1974, which is listed in the catalog with skis for USD 45,000 to 65,000, also has a Volkswagen-like quality.
We could go on and on, because there are special stories and backgrounds to tell about almost every car on offer. Detailed information can of course be found in the auction catalogs and on the RM/Sotheby's website.
