RM/Sotheby's will auction 130 full-size vehicles (including a tractor and a boat) at the Arizona Bitmore Resort & Spa on January 18 and 19, 2018. There will also be a number of children's cars and automobilia, such as a Ferrari 250 GTO fender, which is expected to fetch over USD 15,000.

RM/Sotheby's is also hoping for solvent and bidding customers in the new year; after all, a car is expected to cost around USD 500,000 on average, and the total value of the 130 lots was estimated at around USD 65 million (EUR 55.3 million, CHF 64.4 million).

Brand diversity with well-known dominators

Five brands dominate around half of the auction, as 20 Ferrari sports cars, 15 Porsches, 11 Packards, 10 Jaguars and 7 Rolls-Royces add up to 63 cars.

The remainder is then spread across 33 other brands, many of which, e.g. Bugatti, Auburn, Chrysler. De Tomaso or Studebaker, are represented just once. All in all, the range is quite wide.

A Jaguar D-Type as the highlight

The Jaguar D-Type from 1954, known under its registration "OKV 2", is said to be worth USD 12 to 15 million. After all, it is one of five works cars from 1954, which was used several times at Le Mans and at the wheel of which a number of racing legends took turns, including Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn.

A largely complete history and a successful restoration make the price appear quite realistic.

Valuable dinosaurs

Also expensive, but at a lower level, are two Dino mid-engined sports cars. The 206 GT from 1969 was estimated at USD 625,000 to 825,000, while the 246 GT from 1972 with the popular Daytona seats and fender flares is expected to reach USD 500,000 to 700,000. In both cases, these would be top dollar.

A unique 1952 Ferrari 212 Inter coupé by Ghia, which was once presented at the Paris Motor Show and then acquired by the President of Argentina, Juan Perón, can be bought for around three times that amount.

Almost a quarter of pre-war vehicles

The proportion of pre-war cars is surprisingly high, over a quarter of the cars were built before 1945, including of course almost charming classics from Rolls-Royce, Packard, Ford and Aston Martin, but also two sports cars from Alfa Romeo.

The Alfa Romeo G1 from 1921 in particular is likely to attract a lot of attention here, as the car is considered to be the oldest Alfa ever. An estimated price is not given, but one can assume that it is likely to be a high seven-figure sum.

Many young classics

19 of the 130 vehicles have not yet reached the youngtimer age, i.e. were built after 1998.

These include two BMW Z8s (one of them an Alpina model, but also an Aston Martin DB AR1 Zagato from 2003 (USD 300,000 to 350,000), a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster from 2008 (USD 375,000 to 425,000) or two Mercedes-Benz SLS variants.

One of the cheapest cars in the auction, a 2006 Pontiac Solstice Convertible, also belongs in this group. With only 1900 miles on the clock, the godfather of the local Opel GT is now expected to fetch USD 22,500 to 27,500.

What you can get for 1.5 million

The range that could be secured with a bid of around USD 1.5 million, for example, is interesting.

The spectrum ranges from the Tucker 48 from 1948, the Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Speciale Boano with special bodywork from 1955 or the Shelby GT350 R racing car from 1965, to the Porsche 959 Komfort from 1987 or a practically new Ferrari F12 TdF from 2017.

High, but not consistently exaggerated estimates

In general, the estimated values appear to be high, but not unattainable, even if the expectations for some vehicles, e.g. the 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo at USD 110,000 to 140,000, are very high.

However, whether bidders will take up the offer depends not only on the wagon material in the Arizona Bitmore, but also on the competition in the form of Gooding and Bonhams, some of which also offer comparable vehicles. However, a 1967 Meyers Manx DualSport S by Mendeola Motors is only available at RM/Sotheby's.

Incidentally, the proportion of "no reserve" lots, i.e. vehicles that go under the hammer without a reserve price, is high. As many as 89 of the 130, i.e. 68%, offer the chance to acquire a rare classic at a significantly lower price than expected.
